Explanation:
In my English class this year we had to make a holiday. Me being me couldn't think of anything and I was listening to Judge with my Airpods in class like I shouldn't have been but listening to it I thought maybe I could make a new Edge Day with more stuff. The prompt had stuff like what are rituals and what traditions would happen on your holiday.
My writing:
(Some of this might be a bit changed up to make it more clear)
Edge Day. It's already sorta a thing because of 10 Yard Fight and their last show but if I could change/remake Edge Day some "rituals" would be to have your Xs of course. You would have to listen to bands with straight edge members. If they were straight edge when it was recorded and not now then that's fine. On Edge Day you must wear a shirt of a straight edge band.
Other traditions on Edge Day would be a really big show with all straight edge bands, call it Edge Fest or something like that. Edge Day isn't just one day to not drink, smoke, or do drugs no it's a celebration of people who are straight edge to celebrate the fact that the edge will never go dull. It's a day to break out the old XX-Rated Swatch and look at the Xs on your hands and the X on the watch and remember that when temptation and pressure come along we're thousands strong. Remember that you have friends who like you for who you are and not how many beers you can slam. And I choose to keep my mind clear, free from hurt because I value its worth. Straight edge for me just works and to me it's not just a trend or something to make me feel better than a friend. And because I feel this way it's time I have this to say: Straight Edge isn't just something to have when you're an angsty teen looking to be different from the other people in your family or school or town. We'll stay true 'til death and we'll and prove we've have the edge that'll never go dull.
There's so many problems we'll face but we'll overcome them thinking straight. I don't need a crutch cause I've got the straight edge. I'd rather work 9-5 than drink to stay alive. Drugs will not set you free. That's why I'm a proud member of the drug free youth.
More stuff:
So for this one I just wanted to write about how cool I think some people in the old NYHC scene are.
I was reading the Hardware Anthology yesterday and I read the interview Brett did with John Joseph of CRO-MAGS and BLOOD CLOT and there was a question about gay people. “Shit, there’s going to be something controversial that might make me hate Cro-Mags in here isn’t there” is what I thought when I first saw the question “...you said something about homosexuals” (see page 30 of Hardware issue 7 with the coolest cover of a fanzine ever). Well I read on and to my surprise John had NOTHING against gay people. For someone who looked so scary in pictures he seemed like someone who would just be against that but as they say don’t judge a book by its cover. Reading this just made me want to listen to Cro-Mags even more. “Gay people have a right to do what they do and we don’t have to judge anybody because God will take care of everybody… Let people just be. Let them do what they want.”
There’s some gay, bi, trans, ect. kids in my school and some people make fun of them and stuff which I think is complete bullshit. Why should YOU care about the way people live or their sexual-preferences? Like John Joseph said, it's because they’re weak and I can’t understand why someone would think that way. It makes no sense to me. If someone who lived the life that JJ did and he could be pro-gay why can’t you? Prejudice, homophobia, and racism just doesn’t make sense why should you hate someone you haven't ever really met because they’re gay or black or Jewish.
I also read the interview with Jules Massey of Side By Side and Alone In A Crowd (see pages 21, 22, and 23 of issue 5 with one of the best fanzine covers ever) where the last thing he said in the interview was about racism. COOL! First of all, if I could pick one person that I like the most to read interviews with it’s definitely Jules. The way he tells stories and the way he talks just makes me want to read more. I’ve listened to the Where It Went podcast episode about Side By Side (the “Rev-isted” one with Jules and Billy) at least 5 times. So Jules said that there was a plague that was in the scene called white-power and racism and how it’s something that’s outside of Hardcore culture and that they should not be able to have influence over so many people.
